The Cursed Road..
Or the Roman's Road?
The Cursed Road...
Or the Romans Road....
(Which will it be?)
A man thought to go out drinking with his buddies, so away he did go.
Did he know he would soon he looking at the face of a ghost everyday for the rest of his life?
He had went drinking you see, with some friends as he had many times before, then he ignored the warnings. He knew he felt a little dizzy or spacey, maybe he was high, but not too much surely he could drive home.
He had done this before. He knew he would make it so he got in the car, and closed his car door, put the key in the switch and started on his way home.
It was early yet and he could be able to see plenty well, the road was clear. Except for one lone person walking down the road, he had the road to himself.
He did not see any traffic and he was in a hurry. He called his friend on the phone as he stepped on the gas. He needed to hurry home, as he had much to do.
Just as he picked up speed he felt a crash, saw something on the windshield for a second. Then it was gone. He did not see anything after the first glance at the windshield. He also did not see the person he had just seen walking. That person was gone? Where had this person gone?
Oh, well, he thought, maybe the person went up a driveway or something. He need not concern himself with someone walking down the road. After all he did not know him.
Yet somehow something was nagging at him. What was it? He just could not shake the feeling that something was somehow not right.
Well, he thought I'll just go on home have a drink or two, then watch a little TV. But he was restless.
Something was wrong he could feel it; he paced off for awhile, talked on the phone, watched a little bit of television. Then fell into an uneasy sleep.
There was that nagging thought again....where had that person walking gone???
Should he be concerned??...also what about his windshield what had he hit??
Could he have hit this person??? Nooooo.....he thought, I am a good driver, a couple of beers couldn't impair his driving that much, after all he was nearly thirty surely by now he could handle his liquor, or beer. He was not a novelist after all. He had been drinking for a good number of years.
He had nothing to be concerned about...oh but the night was spent very fitful and he just tossed and turned. Over and over again he heard the impact.
Almost felt the impact even in his dreams. Again and again he saw someone walking...then they disappeared. Where... where had this person gone?
After a stressful night, he awoke fairly early, still with a nagging thought... why, why am I so restless so uneasy???
After all I only had a few drinks at the bar, and came home. Then he thought again of his windshield he would have to look into having that repaired.
The windshield was busted nearly all the way thru and was curved in just as though a ball or something had hit it...or....and here he hesitated in his thoughts....what if...
NOooo... he shook the thought from his mind. He could not have really hit that person who was walking, but where had that person gone???
This was an uneasy question to think about. So he got a cup of coffee, and a bowl of cereal. Sitting down in his easy chair to watch the news before getting ready for the day....
But what is this???
There on the screen right in front of him was the person who he had seen walking down the road in front of him.
NOooo...
As he reached for the remote he barely noticed as the cereal bowl dropped from his hands crashing to the floor. His coffee spilling as he jumped up and ran closer to the TV he stood and watched as the news reporter repeated again..."the police need your help in finding a hit and run driver....who..."
From that point the words faded as it suddenly dawned on him, what the reason for the nagging thought was... he was the driver??
But how?? ? NOooo...... he reasoned in his mind there must be a mistake.
But even as he thought on these things someone was calling to report that his car had damage that matched what the police was looking for...
Just then the phone rang drawing him back to the present, as he walked over to the kitchen picking up the phone he heard someone on the other end crying.
His friend was telling him that he would have to turn himself in, because already someone had called the police. It would be better he was told if he would just call the police and turn himself in, letting them know he may have been the driver.
As he listened in a daze, his friend's voice seemed to come in and out of his mind this was a nightmare. How could this be???
He did not remember hitting anyone, what had happened???
He barely heard as his friend said..."I'll be right over for moral support as you call the police".
So he called the police, as the phone rang he hesitated, should he just hang up??? No, that would make matters even worse. As the operator answered... ("how may I help you?")
He shook his head he needed to stay focused.
His voice trembled as he said these words: "Yes, I believe that I am the driver of the car you're looking for."
The operated then stated "Sir, could you tell me your name please?"
Numbly he stated his name; even as he stated his name he had an odd feeling.
Almost as if someone were watching him...he turned uneasily, knowing that only he was at home, his friend had not yet arrived for moral support. Was his friend even coming?
The operator was talking again, what was it she said? Yes, he could come in for questioning, but he would need to speak with his attorney first.
As he hung up, he began preparing himself for the interview he would give to the police department.
Just then his friend arrived. As he went to the door his friend seemed more upset than himself, really he was in disbelief, he was not a bad person. He could not of been drunk or so distracted as to of caused a death???
Things just did not seem real.
His friend had been delayed because of all the traffic that day; it was an unusually high amount of traffic.
Nothing seemed right this day it was as if everything were surreal. He could not of committed a murder could he of??
But yes, the uneasy feeling was because he had really killed someone.
As his friend talked with him, he prepared himself to get an attorney. He would need to hire an attorney, but whom, now that was the question.
He would have to borrow money from someone, so he called his parents up, explaining what had happened. His parents were in disbelief, his dad was heartbroken, but his mom she was different, as always she was on his side.
Didn't seem to matter that he was the guilty one, and this time it was doubtful if she would be able to get him out of his misdeeds.
Oh, why had he went out to that bar, why had he chose to drive after drinking, why had he thought he was okay, he should of known he wasn't.
But it was too late to think about all of that now.
It was getting later and he needed to go. His parents and a few friends would go with him. He would cooperate he would tell them that he did not know what he had hit.
He had talked to his friend and his mom, they all agreed that he would say he believed he hit a mailbox or a deer, he was not really sure. This was not a good day.
Many times over he would remember this day, because from this day forward never again would that eerie feeling of someone watching leave him. It was almost like he could feel a presence at times.
Never would he drive down that road again without seeing a shadow of someone walking, but always that shadow would vanish, right in front of his eyes, at the same location that this person was found.
Icy cold chills would cut right thru to his heart and soul. It was almost as if someone were asking him something. But what were they asking??
Then in his dreams at night he would hear a voice calling....over and over he would hear this voice. But what was it?
It was as if a voice from beyond the grave was calling to him. Asking him why he had left this other person to die alone in the ditch.
As often as possible he avoided this road, he began to think that this road had a curse on it, and cursed it was, at least to his mind. Because he could not drive down this road without seeing a shadow of someone walking, maybe it was a ghost.
But now this ghost seemed to be following him, seemed like every time he was driving he would feel an icy cold chill, it was like someone was watching him, watching, waiting....
Waiting for what? He could not help this person, they were dead did this person not understand that they were indeed dead?
The dead are gone.
The dead carry no tales...he had heard this all of his life.
But it was not true, because he could sense this person following him, watching him, everyday he could feel someone watching... almost like notes were being taken or something... why would this person not away???
He felt that he was going insane....then he realized not only had he not stopped he had not shown any remorse, he had not even apologized to the family...the ghost that was following him was their tears their heart break... what was he supposed to do???
Then it dawned on him, there was nothing he could do.
The parents had forgiven him as much as possible, but now it was up to him, he could either accept their forgiveness or he could continue walking with his shadow.
Because now instead of just seeing this walking shadow as he drove down just about any road he also saw the same shadow as he walked around his home.
He had not known exactly when he first noticed the shadow had come to his home.
His friends were trying to help him or so they thought, his friends had found a local message board where the family of the victim he murdered posted or read, fairly often.
So his friends had decided to try and run the family down almost as he had done when he had killed their child.
Daily he was updated at the latest things that were said, then weekly or monthly as his friends began tapering off on their postings. Now and then he would hear of more posts, his friends would have made. Intending to hurt the family of the one he had killed over again.
It was at these times that he would not only see but feel the presence of his shadow so strongly that his hair would just stand up on his head. (Or at least that is how it felt) he would also jump at the least noise or movement.
He had managed somehow with the help of his family to avoid going to jail, he had not even really gotten any probation time, just a couple of months.
But even though the court had not really charged him he was constantly looking around because he could feel the eyes of the dead on him.
It was an eerie feeling, but that is the best he could describe it, the feeling he had was of someone from beyond the grave staring at him, watching...and waiting.
As if this someone were wondering if he would again run someone over... wondering why he had not rendered aid.
It was only when he looked in the mirror and admitted to himself that he was indeed a drunk, and that is why this other person was dead. Only then did the shadow seem to step back and the cold chills begin to go away just a little...
But if he even so much as thought of getting drunk, or being around a bunch of drunks he would have an overwhelming sense of dread come over him. Almost as if someone were trying to keep him from it.
Like someone thought he really could kill someone again.
He had already killed two or was it one, he could not remember, the dreaded feeling was back again.
Just then one of his friends sent him a link to a story one of the family members had written, as he read the stories, his hands began to tremble, the paper he had printed out shaking so much he could barely read it.
It was only after he had read the last page that he could understand how that the family could forgive him at all, it was then and only then that he realized his need for a savior.
As much as his family loved him, and as much as they tried they would never be able to save him from the pits of hell. His parents, friends and family could not buy his way into heaven it was impossible.
It was as he was thinking on these things that he stumbled on a Bible tract that said...
'The Roman's Road"...
Now just what was the Romans Road he wondered as he picked the tract up....
As he began reading he saw where he had been traveling on the wrong road for a great many years..
.
This is what he read....
The Romans Road to Salvation
Who is good?
~Romans 3:10~
As it is written, There is none righteous, no,not one.
Who has sinned?
~Romans 3:23~
For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.
Where sin came from.
~Romans 5:12~
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin,and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.
God's price of sin.
~Romans 6:23~
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Who paid The price?
~Romans 5:8~
God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
The only way out.
~Romans 10:9-10~
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth, the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart God hath raised him from the dead thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
Take God at his word and claim His promise for your salvation.
~Romans 10:13~
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
As he read these words from the Bible each word and each verse seemed to cut right thru to his very soul. As he read he noticed that the shadow which he had thought was following him was still.
As he read these words it seemed that he was looking at his soul in a mirror, and it was scary.
Because there was no light within, he had thought he was a basically good person, not too bad after all. But what he saw in the light of God's word was utter darkness and despair.
He saw the truth for the first time, that nothing he could do would ever make things right or even help him to go to heaven. Finally he realized that it was not what he had done that would send him to hell it was instead only his rejection of Christ.
As you have read this story think about your lives, and what it is your doing. If you are a Christian does your life reflect that even when someone does something so bad as to kill one of your loved ones?
What if the loved one that is killed is because of a drunk driver or otherwise impaired driver, or a murder victim, what then? Can you still find it in your heart to forgive?
If not why, have you ever thought of when Christ died for you?
Jesus Christ left heaven and came down to earth to pay the penalty for all of your sins and for mine.
All we have to do is accept that he died for us, and rose again.
Now no one has to spend eternity in Hell.
If you are unsure of where you will spend eternity think about this story, don't let the things you have done become a shadow or burden following you around. Instead accept that Jesus Christ died for you and let him become Lord of your life.
The love of Christ gives peace that passes all understanding, and it is a free gift. No one has to work their way to heaven or pay more penalties' because Christ paid our debts in full.
And this is why I can really and truly be praying for the salvation and conviction of those who have hurt me in many ways that I have not yet told.
If you have enjoyed this article please leave a note, if you as a result of this article decide to accept Christ as your Lord and Saviour, send a note also, I will pray for you to be encouraged and strengthened as you grow in the grace and knowledge of the saving grace of the Lord and Saviour who is Jesus Christ.
Praying also that all who read this article are touched to the heart with why as Christians we are required to forgive others because of the fact that we are also forgiven.
