Gossip or Jesting a poem I wrote back in 2010

Gossip or Jesting
Truly it is the Same

Gossip, gossip, have you heard the latest? Here take a sip...
Have a glass of tea, a mug of coffee, I've heard this from a very lose lip.

Now don't you worry, it's not really gossip, I just want to tell you...
And so it goes from one to another till many are filled with rue.

Idle banter, idle chat, idle words, is it no wonder we will soon give an account for each.
Words spoken in haste, words spoken in a rush, many a friendship may breach.

My dear friend many words may tickle the ears.
Colorful words, plentiful words, but are these a blessing or a curse, have you led many to cheer or to a tear?

My dearest friend words you say, words I say, are we being a blessing or a curse.
Words cheerful and plenty, is the gossip we indulge in, is it for another any worse?

You laugh, I laugh, but then we complain, when the shoe is turned the other way.
My dearest must we jest? Truly we should not, for as we do many will be led astray.

I love you, you love me, this it is true, we've crossed the t' and dotted our i's.
Now it's time to ask ourselves why?

Why must we fuss, why must we run another down, why must we linger and jest?
If you find your relationships are strained, your friends coming around much less, perhaps gossip has found new ground to test?

Gossip, gossip, it gobbles up time, and consumes the unaware.
Uncovering secrets, and half-truths, old wounds soon lay bare.

If gossip you must, my friend.
Do this only to the mirror within, for ugly is the gossip in the end.

Cruelty and ignorance abide fast in the mouths of those who must indulge in a tale.
Beginning, or ending, carrying or revealing gossip of another forever will in someone's heart run stale.

Gossip my friend if you must carry.
Take heed lest soon the words you've spread you marry.

Speak softly, kindly and well, for my friend tomorrow you may stumble and fall.
Step aside, reach out a hand, and remember within fragile clay jars, we live all.

Drifting through time and space, to spread a tale, many will jest, forgetting the price.
But truly my dearest friend, remember for the swell of gossip there is no ice.

Gossip, if you must.
But remember the one you betray today, forever will have for you lost their trust.

Trust hard won, and earned, should never ever be taken for granted my dearest friend.
Gossip my dearest it is how my trust for you has found an end...
