High Blood Pressure: The Silent Thief that May Steal Your Memory
Dementia and High Blood Pressure, is There a Connection?
So we've heard that high blood pressure may cause us to have a heart attack, stroke, kidney failure or blindness.
This, danger that is faced by those with extended untreated hypertension is dementia. Now this does not happen all at once it is a gradual process. By the time we begin to notice something is wrong we may have had symptoms for a long time.
Hypertension can be treated, with medication, a healthy diet, and also with exercise. Exercise can lower blood pressure, as can learning to deal with the daily stresses we each face in our lives.
We have all heard repeated warnings to guard our hearts through maintaining a healthy blood pressure. To reduce high blood pressure to that we can avoid heart attacks and strokes.
Well now you have another reason, this reason may be why some of us keep forgetting things as we age with hypertension untreated, poorly treated, undiagnosed or ignored. This reason involves our memory.
Scientists have been of late diligently studying the brains of people who have hypertension, or at least those involved in their study.
So what have they found? They have found that hypertension, or in plain English (high blood pressure) fuels or triggers a type of scarring on the brain, that has been linked to Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementias. These scars build up for decades before memory problems begin to appear.
About one in eight people who are 65 years or older will be diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or some other form of dementia. Scientists have known for a long time that certain things are likely to increase the risk of dementia type problems.
Risk factors that you will recognize as triggers for many difficulties are a sedentary lifestyle, obesity, diabetes's and hypertension.
These are all treatable conditions, with lifestyle changes and dietary changes you may find that not only will you prevent costly medical bills, due to strokes, or heart attacks, you may also avoid, gaps in your memory.
Scientists are continuing to study the effects of high blood pressure on the brain, and there is another study scheduled to begin, within the next few months. This study will look at how aggressive treatment for high blood pressure may prevent or prolong the onset of various dementias.
Forgetfulness is a serious condition; it is also a silent condition of the brain. When we begin to forget things often, there is a very real possibility that we will turn an oven on and forget we have, this could lead to the burning of dinner or even the burning down of our homes.
Or we could accidently double up on medication that will have unpleasant or fatal side effects.
If you are affected by hypertension, it is to your benefit to get your blood pressure under control, not only because you are at risk for a heart attack, stroke, kidney failure or blindness, but because you could really lose your memory. This can lead to a lifestyle you never intended to live during your old age.
